The outside has this charming dragon inflatable and a cozy bookstore atmosphere already. Inside it looked like the most absent minded wizard minded the shop for the past hundred years- very on brand. There were piles of books on the floor on the tops of shelves and around corners you wouldn't expect. There were decorations and tchotchkes relating to the different sections for the themes.
As I looked for some specific authors in the fantasy section I realized the order starting with the last names A in the fantasy section shelves were arranged thus: went along two sides of an alcove around one wall wound around to shelves up the stairs, then along the railing at the top of the stairs. Did this sound confusing? It was when I was actually looking for books! As a librarian this particular organization hurt my soul a little...but as a bout of whimsy for the wizard that clearly stuck things where they could it was quite a cute mini adventure!
In the end I was able to find some of the books I was looking for! In true 100-year-old wizardly fashion...he did not take credit cards. We had to walk two doors down with my books to a cute and far more organized comic and graphic novel store to pay. This is quite the trusting system but it did also introduce me to the comic store so I guess overall it's a win for them!
I think I will journey here again if I am looking for a specific maybe older title that can't be found in other stores and if I'm in the Berkley area again maybe stop by for a bit of whimsy just to have the atmosphere of a maze of old books in the charming a way few modern bookshops can manage.
